Being present is one the most important things we can do. This isn’t precluded to moments of intense focus, or only in serious moments, but in every moment that we can be. When we can do this for another person, we can offer them something that we all require, a sympathetic ear and an empathetic heart.
Emotional pain is highly subjective, and as such, we’ll come across situations where we cannot fully understand what another person may be feeling, despite potentially having dealt with similar feelings in the past. This doesn’t mean that we are unable to connect with the person, it means that we are forced to respond with sympathy as opposed to responding with empathy. Our experiences still can inform and provide insight even though we may have not dealt with the same problems.
When loved ones are dealing with conflict, we want to do everything we can to solve it for them, unfortunately, this isn’t something we’re often meant to do. Instead, we can help them by offering them strength, support, and unconditional positive regard.
