The concept of a “Queendom” is one that I have thought of since I was a child. I always thought that we, as a culture, are a byproduct of “Kingdoms,” so what would everything look like if we were instead products of “Queendoms.” This is a quintessential “grass is greener” type of question, yet I cannot let go of the thought.
As I grew up, I learned that there had indeed been many cultures that were based on matriarchal systems as opposed to the patriarchal systems most of us have been born into and continue to live within. These systems were often in Native tribes and would also embrace stronger concepts of fluidity within traditional gender roles. Under this concept, a person can be, whoever it is they feel they are. Ultimately this fosters opportunity that allows for the creation of numerous personal realities while embracing the realities others have created for themselves.
Queens come in all shapes and sizes. They can be notable figures, fictitious heroines, or most importantly the womyn already in our own personal lives. It isn’t embodied in a royal lineage, but in the actions and spirit, a person carries. Most anyone can rise to the role, but not everyone has the volition to try, nor do they have the strength of character when life thrusts these roles on them.
I’ve never really thought that a complete role-reversal of answering one extreme with another would be the answer—but I do fight for fair representation across all race, creeds, and genders. In an age where this fight has become more critical than ever, I see every victory as a step away from the traditional “Kingdom,” and towards a more prosperous “Queendom.”
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
The underdogs are my lions
The silent ones are my choir
The women will be my soldiers
With the weight of life on their shoulders
[Pre-Chorus]
Drink until you’ve had enough
I’ll drink from your hands
I will be your warrior
I will be your lamb
Oooooohhh eyyyyyy yaaaaaa
Ehhhhhhh ahhhhhhh
Oooooohhh ahhhh
[Chorus]
Till Queendom come
Till Queendom come
My Queendom come
My Queendom come
[Verse 2]
The sea waves are my evening gown
And the sun on my head is my crown
I made this Queendom on my own
And all the mountains are my throne
[Pre-Chorus]
Drink until you’ve had enough
I’ll drink from your hands
I will be your warrior
I will be your lamb
Oooooohhh eyyyyyy yaaaaaa
Ehhhhhhh ahhhhhhh
Oooooohhh ahhhh
[Chorus]
Till Queendom come
Till Queendom come
My Queendom come
My Queendom come
Ahhhhhhhhh, oooooo ahhhhhh
Queendom come
Ahhhhhhhhh, oooooo ahhhhhh
My Queendom come
[Bridge]
I hunt the grounds for empathy
And hate the way it hides from me
With care and thirst I have become
You have a home in my Queendom
You have a home in my Queendom
You have a place in my Queendom
You’ll find a place
[Chorus]
Till Queendom come
Till Queendom come
My Queendom come
My Queendom come
Ahhhhhhhhh, oooooo ahhhhhh
Queendom come
Queendom come
Queendom come
Ahhhhhhhhh, oooooo ahhhhhh
My Queendom come
