Maps is a musical pillar in my life. I have distinct memories in almost every era of my life since it debuted 15 years ago. It’s one of few songs that didn’t belong to my brother’s generation, my parent’s generation, or anyone else’s, it felt like it was mine all by itself. I think that helps drive the reason as to why it been so pivotal.

Karen O’s lyrics and delivery are absolutely perfect in delivering a response to the sentiment that has been felt by countless people. “They don’t love you like I love you.” Whether it’s out of jealousy, envy, love, pride, remorse, or whatever the passion that drives this thought is one which is primordially relatable to humans. To yearn for something that you believe earnestly is yours and yours alone.  This song was only made possible by Karen’s pursuit in delivering a raw and authentic performance.

If you have listened to this song more than once, there’s a good chance you may have also seen the video. In it we see Karen slowly give in to a profoundly relatable emotional performance, ending in tears streaming down her face, and most viewers. As time has gone, she’s spoken more on it saying:  They were real tears. My boyfriend at the time was supposed to come to the shoot – he was three hours late, and I was just about to leave for tour. I didn’t think he was even going to come and this was the song that was written for him. He eventually showed up, and I got myself in a real emotional state.

To write a love song that stands the test of time … that’s all I ever wanted to do. Especially as I’m a hopeless romantic. So this song is pretty important to me. It came completely out of the ether.
He [Angus Andrew] was on tour, and we never saw each other, and I hated it, so I emailed: ‘Why do they get to be with you? They don’t love you like I love you.’

When it released in 2003 Maps was not what mainstream music sounded like. But it was a new millennium, and with it, how we were going to listen and consume media was about to change; online music discovery began to eclipse what radio and television could do, internet users became the tastemakers. Add Karen’s unbelievable performance live, and in the video, it wasn’t long before Yeah Yeah Yeah’s began growing in popularity. Many critics have cited the success of the Yeah Yeah Yeah’s as being the roadmap which much of modern indie/alternative rock has been built serving as one of the first major indie-pop crossovers—to that point Karen O has said she just wanted “to fuck shit up.” No matter how you cut it the passion on display since say day one has driven their success.
