Written by Charlie Chaplin and John Turn, Smile, was made famous by Nat King Cole and has been covered by countless musicians. The song evokes a classic, quintessential essence of innocence and simplicity.

The lyrics themselves are quite simple. When life treats you poorly when everything seems to be going wrong, when you’re sad or hurt, don’t give up! Instead, smile, keep your head up and look through the muck to the beauty that rests all around.

When I was a child my Grandfather told me once, “fake it until you make it,” I have no idea what he was specifically referring to at the moment, but it has stayed with me regardless. I don’t think there’s a day since where I haven’t considered back to that little kernel of wisdom, as it’s something I use regularly.

Having suffered from depression and anxiety disorders in myself, I’m fortunate to have been able to utilize this technique on an innumerable amount of occasions. It didn’t always work, but it did work 100% more than doing nothing. Ultimately I think that’s what this song is about; it’s not about smiling, and instantly everything is better, but rather putting in the effort because no one is going to do it for you.

Lyrics:

Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it’s breaking
When there are clouds in the sky you’ll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You’ll see the sun come shining through
For you

Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear maybe ever so near
That’s the time you must keep on trying
Smile- what’s the use of crying
You’ll find that life is still worth while
If you just smile
Oh that’s the time you must keep on trying

Smile what’s the use of crying
You’ll find that life is still worth while
If you just smile
