“Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength while loving someone deeply gives you courage.” – Lao Tzu
I had wanted to ask my wife to marry pretty quickly after becoming involved with her. Fortunately, it was recommended I take it slow so as not to scare her off. As we continued to let our relationship develop, it became apparent that this person was starting to develop similar feelings.
Thankfully she’s the wiser, and more level-headed of the two of us, as such she was clever enough to place some particular and monumental conditions that had to be met prior to getting married.
I’ve realized since then that this time would be remembered as some of the most critical and fundamental periods of growth, not only for our relationship but for us as individuals. There were countless opportunities for our paths to gracefully diverge, and yet at each one of those points, our own personal roads would lead us back to one another. Our beliefs and our goals began to strengthen one another’s and build the foundation for a magikal life together.
We knew that we wanted to be going in the same direction, and since that period our goals and values have continued to align in ways that surprise us. I’d like to think that neither one of us is so rooted into any specific pattern of thought or action that we aren’t constantly striving to evaluate a better way to live; this is one of many connecting characteristics. In those moments when one of us is having difficulty understanding a point of view outside our own understanding we stop, and we talk about it together, we do the best to break down as much as we can to intake the full story.
This is why it’s important not to look for “the perfect person,” but a person that wants to work on perfecting things with you. A person that understands that as time goes on our views and opinions will change, but through dialogue, we can come to understand their growth together. As the song says “every day with you, I say I do,” because every day is new and with it brings new challenges, but when you find a person that brings you the courage to face them you’ve found as close to “perfect” as possible.
This song encompasses a lot of this sentiment and more. It’s why we ultimately chose it as our wedding song. Every day we wake up, and we choose that person. We choose them to love, to support, and rely on. The power of this choice on a daily basis continues to strengthen the foundation of our relationship, and for that, I am truly grateful.
Lyrics:
Meet me where you’re going,
cuz I wanna be going where you are.
Teach me what you’re knowing,
cuz I wanna be knowing who you are.
Run away with me, yeah, let’s get married.
Will you be the rest of my life?
Every day with you I say “I do”,
and it means so much more each time.
And I love you and how.
Won’t leave you alone.
Will you be my home now?
And I’ll be your home.
Pray God protect us.
Pray God for guidance.
Make us selfless and rich in soul.
Cuz when we grow old, Love,
I’ll just love you more, Love,
through the sunshine and through the cold.
I’m not afraid, come fire, come rain,
with you here by my side.
I found boundless love for you
when I lost my foolish pride.
And I love you and how.
Won’t leave you alone.
Will you be my home now?
And I’ll be your home.
Thank you for patience.
Thank you for-giveness.
Thank you for spending this time with me.
Meet me where you’re going,
cuz I wanna be going wherever you’ll be.
Run away with me, yeah, let’s get married.
Will you be the rest of my life?
Every day with you I say “I do”,
and it means so much more each time.
And I love you and how.
Won’t leave you alone.
Will you be my home now?
And I’ll be your home.
And I love you and how.
Won’t leave you alone.
Will you be my home now?
And I’ll be your home.
