When I met my wife, she introduced me to a concept that I had never really explored, and yet in the moment that she explained it to me so many things in my life began to make sense. She expounded that in life we have “soul agreements” with others—sometimes we confuse these “agreements” as being “mates,” sometimes they are, but usually they are more complicated than that, and not always as romantic.

The idea allows for people to carry their spiritual agreements throughout their process of reincarnation, as a simple example, in this life your mother birthed you, in a past life you may have birthed her, or been another relative or close friend. Of course, this is a straightforward and optimistic approach. Nevertheless, there are people in our life that we are entwined within a multitude of capacities, some of which not in the most positive ways.

In my youth, I had the Ted Mosby disease of falling in love with pretty much any woman who showed love towards me. After entering into a committed relationship, I couldn’t understand not giving EVERYTHING to that person, and so that’s what I did. This made for a tumultuous period of heartache and remorse when everything would undoubtedly blow up.

I always believed I gave everything because that’s what I was trained to do, but as I’ve grown, I realize it’s much more than that. Most of the people that I may have felt/feel “chained” to I believe I hold one of these agreements with them. For some, those agreements have been met, and for others, who knows if they ever will be… at least in this life.

It’s only been in understanding the nature of these spiritual agreements that I was genuinely able to release some of the pain, shame, grief, and remorse that I had brooding in me for years. Points of conflict that I had never been able to give a voice to.

Lyrics:

Listen to the wind blow, watch the sun rise
Running in the shadows, damn your love, damn your lies

And if, you don’t love me now
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain (never break the chain)

And if you don’t love me now (you don’t love me now)
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain (never break the chain)

Listen to the wind blow, down comes the night
Running in the shadows, damn your love, damn your lies
Break the silence, damn the dark, damn the light

And if you don’t love me now
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain (never break the chain)

And if you don’t love me now (you don’t love me now)
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain (never break the chain)

And if you don’t love me now (you don’t love me now)
You will never love me again
I can still hear you saying
You would never break the chain (never break the chain)

Chain keep us together (running in the shadow)
Chain keep us together (running in the shadow)
Chain keep us together (running in the shadow)
Chain keep us together (running in the shadow)
Chain keep us together (running in the shadow)
