The “Rabbit Hole” has long been used as a euphemism for a journey with no known end, nor the extent of circumstances. This can be lauded as an adventurous endeavor or reviled as an endless well of unknown dangers.

Bright Eyes make their third appearance in this list of music, and there’s quite a few more in the weeks to come; I say this because Bright Eyes has an anthology of music that can fit into many emotions, (though they may lend themselves on the more brooding side of the emotional spectrum.) Down in a Rabbit Hole has always created a sense of unease and unpleasantness within. The music itself makes me feel…grimy.

After having listened to it for a few years I found myself with a wide collection of friends and these songs began evolving, as they continue to do to this day. The allure of escape is too much for some to deny; its draw is hypnotizing. This is where addiction begins and ultimately ends. The chase, an elusive feeling that many have felt, with just a little more they can get it. Ultimately though, the search is all for naught.

It’s hard to look at how we deal with the concept of addiction within our society. We villainize as a means to rally supporters; we detain in order to ensnare a population with little-to-know alternatives. Our system is built on recidivism and privatization of modern slavery, a disgusting interpretation of what we could’ve been.

Lyrics:

I heard you fell into a rabbit hole
Covered yourself up in snow
Baby, tell me where’d you go for days and days
Did they make you stay up all night?
Did they paint your face that pasty white?
You’re thirsty but your appetite gets chased away

The sun turns us to stone
It’s a cloudy day
But we still can’t go
Up and out that cellar door
Till we see the moon
We’re invisible

No one ever takes the garbage out
A neighbor kid gets dared to touch the house
He runs back only to announce there’s no one home
As we paint the foil with the flame
Smear the soda, taste butane
For every fear that can’t be named to calm you down

Your heart starts skipping steps
So you’re farther gone
Than you might expect
If your thoughts should turn to death
Got to stomp them out
Like a cigarette

I heard you fell into a rabbit hole
Covered yourself up in snow
Baby, tell me where’d you go
For days and days and days
Days and days and days and days
Days and days and days and days
Days and days and days and days
