Winter Solstice, it’s a day that is truly remarkable. It’s a SOLSTICE, and I find those to be pretty special. For years now, standard tradition with Solstices have become 24 hour celebrations of the year, the seasons, and that transitioning of the light. With each new day the light will grow little by little.
Winter has always been a place where we retreat into the cave, and this is something I have always found a tranquil serene existence in. Several years ago during another more “apocalyptic” Winter Solstice I was able to capture a serene moment. It’s a moment of time that somehow shares a snippet of its spirit with each Winter Solstice before it, and every one following it. People, playing with the light, and welcoming its slow and gradual return.
Understandably if you were to look at the lyrics this isn’t representative of the Winter Solstice in the slightest, but with a title like The Darkest Day it’s going to get some Winter Solstice playtime. As Winter Solstice has become a more standardized holiday for myself, this song is sort of like a personal carol I suppose.
Lyrics:
On the darkest day
I will stay
On the darkest day of the year
What you said burns like coal
Wait till the fire dies
When all that’s left is ashes
Throw it in my eyelashes
On the darkest day
I will stay
On the darkest day of the year
All is fear
On the darkest day of the year
All is clear
No matter what you say you want
I know I’ll never be enough
Why don’t I seek out someone
Who loves my empty pockets
