Alaska in Winter (AIW) evokes deep emotion within me. Truthfully, I could make an argument for most emotions being represented by the music. Most songs are absent of words. The music speaks more than any lyrics could.

Though brooding and somewhat dismal in sound, there’s a calming element that lulls distressed spirits. That’s what I found in this song, and a lot of AIW Music. The music, the title, all of it sings to a deep loss. Since being shown this music, and especially this song, it has acted as a major catharsis allowing myself to give form to what often feels like an insurmountable feeling.

When each song is listened to individually, the feeling is overwhelmingly morose. When taken in a broader scope there is an emerging hope that begins to develop.

Regardless even Brandon Bethancourt, creator of Alaska in Winter, has spoken about his own reluctance in the music he’s created. So, no matter how you cut it the music is sad. It was created out of sadness, and he nailed it. In that creation he’s helped countless of others manage their own grief and sadness.
