Heartache and frustration go hand and hand. Florence Welch focuses very heavily on this association, especially on her Ceremonials album. The entire album seems to stand as a testament to the dissolution of varying relationships. This theme is one that comes quickly in its association as numerous friends used it as their “post-break-up anthem albums.”
The lyrics do well enough to paint a person’s frustration. Wanting to simultaneously salvage what little may be left in their relationship, while also knowing that there is nothing to save and in fact its best to leave. I suppose that’s all the song really needs to be, but for myself, there was always a bit more to explore through its themes.
Personally, I always saw lines like “you want a revelation / some kind of resolution” as a line that speaks much louder than within the narrow confines of a dissolving relationship. When are we not wanting some insight or some kind of answer handed to us in our most tense situations?
When we’re looking at an impossible feat it’s easy to see no light at the end of the tunnel. The weight of expectation can quickly turn to a debilitating hurdle—it’s enough to stop us in our tracks. Just like most things in life it’s incumbent on ourselves to push through.
It’s in these moments of extreme pressure that we often have little choice in the circumstances, yet we frequently have a choice in our response to the situation. We can choose to let that debilitating weight stop us yet again, or push through. When it feels like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel remember that up to that point you have already survived 100% of all of your life’s worst experiences…there’s a good chance you’ll not only survive this but be the better for it.
Lyrics:
You are the hole in my head
You are the space in my bed
You are the silence in between
What I thought and what I said
You are the night-time fear
You are the morning when it’s clear
When it’s over your start
You’re my head, you’re my heart
No light, no light in your bright blue eyes
I never knew daylight could be so violent
A revelation in the light of day
You can choose what stays and what fades away
And I’d do anything to make you stay
No light, no light
(No light)
Tell me what you want me to say
Through the crowded islands crying out at me
In your place there were a thousand other faces
I was disappearing in plain sight
Heaven help me I need to make it right
You want a revelation
You want to get it right
And it’s a conversation
I just can’t have tonight
You want a revelation
Some kind of resolution
You are the revelation
No light, no light in your bright blue eyes
I never knew daylight could be so violent
A revelation in the light of day
You can choose what stays and what fades away
And I’d do anything to, to make you stay
No light, no light
(No light)
Tell me what you want me to say
But would you leave me
If I told you what I’ve done
And would you leave me
If I told you what I’ve become
‘Cause it’s so easy
To sing it to a crowd
But it’s so hard, my love
To say it to you, all alone
No light, no light in your bright blue eyes
I never knew daylight could be so violent
A revelation in the light of day
You can choose what stays and what fades away
And I’d do anything to make you stay
No light, no light
Tell me what you want me to say
You want a revelation
You want to get it right
But, it’s a conversation
I just can’t have tonight
You want a revelation
Some kind of resolution
You want a revelation
You want a revelation
You want to get it right
But, it’s a conversation
I just can’t have tonight
You want a revelation
Some kind of resolution
Tell me what you want me to say
Thank you for this, it is the damn truth: “When it feels like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel remember that up to that point you have already survived 100% of all of your life’s worst experiences…there’s a good chance you’ll not only survive this but be the better for it.“
