For the better part of the last ten years when an election would roll around I would usually find myself in a public radio station. I had worked in public radio for almost a decade, doing a myriad of tasks and jobs, but ultimately what I would tell myself, helping perform a vital public service. Why does this matter? Well mainly because it helps myself what these sort of days used to feel like.
Being surrounded by journalists and reporters, especially those working for any facet of National Public Radio, tend to be some of the most insightful and selfless individuals, at least when it comes to propel democracy and the freedom of the press. There was camaraderie in being able to be apart of the larger democratic process, and even in being the ones that helped document and verify information as it came in.
This made these days exciting, hopeful, one which, no matter the outcome I knew the greater good would prevail.
Growing up in modern America has been a roller-coaster of discovery, learning one’s own role within a perceived immovable force.
The video for this song has Bjork battling a gorilla; a metaphor for a larger inner struggle she was emotionally dealing with in regards to constantly helping, and hoping for some change within one of her own personal relationships. Being pulled away from what she’s fighting for, the gorilla is ultimately trying to take her from where she should go. I find that it is a fantastic anthem for the day. Really, anyone on any side of the poll can find some empowerment in it. For the image associated with this piece the gorilla was replaced by an elephant.
With the outcome uncertain there’s not much that can be done… talk about nervousness. I feel like best case scenario, there’s a lot of work to be done, but at least there’s a chance to do some of it… worst case scenario, well that may have to be revisited on another day. Regardless, tomorrow will be met by an Army of Me, because that’s all I command.
Lyrics:
You’ve got to manage
I won’t sympathize
Anymore
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
There’s nothing wrong
Self sufficiency please!
And get to work
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
We won’t save you
Your rescue squad
Is too exhausted
You’ll meet an army of me
And if you complain once more
You’ll meet an army of me
