Sun Sounds of Arizona Awarded Grant from the Gila River Community Council
Sun Sounds of Arizona strengthens their health productions.
Tempe Sun Sounds of Arizona—The audio listening service, Sun Sounds of Arizona, was awarded a $15,000 grant from the Gila River Community Council and directed through the City of Tempe. The grant is intended to provide operational funds for health programming, Sun Sounds of Arizona operates in support of individuals who are visually disabled.
There are 286 hours of original health programming every year within the Tempe affiliate and production studios. This project focuses on providing health care information and physical activity tailored to 450,000 potential listeners statewide who have disabilities that do not allow them to read printed text. The health programs broadcast information that is read on air for Sun Sound of Arizona’s listening audience. The report promotes health for the listening audience, informs listeners how to prevent disease effectively, encourages physical activity, and educates listeners to various health issues.
Programming includes reading of the Diabetes Newsletter, which is information on diabetes drawn from local and national sources, Natural Health which is a news source that provides information on Alternative Medicine as well as natural solutions from Dr. OZ, The People’s Pharmacy which is an hour-long program produced by NPR. Additionally, there is Get Fit with Gay, which is a physical exercise program, Health and You which provides information generated from Health News, John Hopkins and Mayo Clinic Newsletters, and lastly, there is Disability News which provides news from several different sources reporting on various disabilities and associated issues.
Those without the ability to read text can be limited in their interactions with society. Being blind or with low vision that makes it impossible to read text restricts people with visual disabilities from significant sources of information and knowledge. This grant award will go a long way to helping ensure that these populations can continue receiving the support they need.
