Having fallen in love with Jens over ten years ago, it’s safe to say there was an eager anticipation for this show in particular. Sure there’s been a few fleeting opportunities over the years where this could have been remedied, however in his somewhat obscure notoriety, the timing and scheduling of his shows have been similar in nature, alas the dance of scheduling conflicts.

The set began with a beautifully silhouetted pianist, playing the delicate melody, Every Little Hair Knows Your Name as Jens and the rest of his Swedish posse took to the stage. There was a distinct softness each one of them carried, this wasn’t just in their constant smiles, but their general demeanor, obviously befitting to the sounds of the soft and congenial nature that Jens Lekman’s albums have cultivated. Going into an older, yet to Lekman enthusiasts, very familiar song A Higher Power, it was an early indication that there was going to be a respectable mix of his collection on display.

Jens conversational lyrics have always been a favorite in the headphones, walking down the street, and watching everyday events with his often blunt and sincere words, are not only profoundly astute in the most random situations, but also highly entertaining, (definitely a recommended action, when there’s nothing else to do.) On stage this conversational style is made even more enjoyable, masking what at times feels and sounds like spoken poetry, into lyrics that can often bring a sense of melancholy, but at least leave you with the trace of a smile. From the beginning Jens created a playful relationship with the audience, especially through showering as many as he could with confetti from his pockets, yet he still managed to maintain his somewhat shy persona—this associated with the kind disposition his band was showing made for a truly humble, and appreciative atmosphere. After waiting a very long time to see Jens Lekman, this performance definitely made me feel like it was worth it.
