Last week, April 1st-April 7th, there were numerous alarming ecological reports, as well as many comments from politicians rebutting the implications these reports were citing.
It’s interesting because just this day there was a global frenzy for the efforts of over 200+ scientists from around the world that were able to photograph a black hole light years away. This news has been met with resounding excitement; yet when scientists tell us that there is something currently happening to our earth on a massive scale,, there’s a large population that feels like they can disregard their work. YOU CAN’T HAVE IT BOTH WAYS KAREN
I digress, YACHT has always been on the more inciteful side in regards to their own personal, philosophical, and theological views, this song highlights the hubris that is the human species. We have consumed our resources at a rate which quickly outpaces our ability to allow our environment an opportunity to reproduce them. We have created waste and byproduct that has leeched toxins into nearly every bio-system. The polar icecaps which act as our primary weather control system have melted at exponential rates, rates that continue to speed up. In turn, our world is burning.
Interestingly enough the last time I saw YACHT live they felt the need to specify how this song is more satirical, and in fact implored the audience to be conscientious about the future. Having been an attendant at YACHT shows for over a decade, I felt like this amendment was almost a character break from their air of passive-certainty they’ve managed to master. As Claire L. Evans puts it, “it’s supposed to be cathartic, it’s not supposed to be literal… we do have daughters.”
Lyrics:
The Earth, the Earth is on fire!
We don’t have no daughter,
Let the motherfucker burn!
We are hungry, we are all tired.
Our tongues they are all on fire.
The walls that we build are higher, higher, higher, higher.
Strange days lead to strange nights.
You aren’t afraid of the dark dark dark dark
When it’s where you walk walk walk walk,
When it’s where you learn to talk.
Every day the sky gets lower, lower, lower, lower,
And every day the tide is blacker, blacker, blacker,
And every day the flames get higher, higher, higher,
Yeah, every day the flames get higher, higher, higher!
The Earth, the Earth is on fire!
We don’t have no daughter,
Let the motherfucker burn!
The Earth, the Earth is on fire!
If we cut off the water
Then the jackals would return.
We live like lions, we live our lives
With no more husbands,
No more wives,
We let our children multiply ’cause we’re afraid of dying.
