Not gonna lie, Surprise is challenging to capture in a song. Going into this week, I felt like the only proper way of honoring the emotion is to honestly do the best I can in letting the song…surprise me.
Ratatat’s Wildcat was probably one of the first Ratatat songs I heard. It’s the only song off the album, Classics, which is not purely instrumental and that’s due to the inclusion of the cat sample used.
I remember hearing this song for the first time, and I did not expect the bobcat like sound to come over the speakers. I may have anticipated some initial drop, but that little surprise has left a lasting memory. I think about this song frequently due to its surprising fundamental nature and subsequent climatic musical journey that follows.
We have a beautiful white and orange cat, known as flame-point, named Franklin. He’s always had a ferocious spirit, often unabashed by any threat. This creates a rapid and dramatic emotional response in him allowing him to go from adorable cat to crazy dangerous killer animal. He’s never been overly aggressive or violent, but his reactions would suggest otherwise. When he first started acting this way he would make a kitty growl that reminded me of the bobcat from this song. Hence the image for today.
Supposedly during a September 15, 2006 interview on radio station KEXP, the band revealed that part of the album was recorded in upstate New York in a house owned by Björk, so there’s another little surprise.

No lyrics, just dance.
