One of the anthems of 2013, Blurred Lines, has been surrounded in controversy from day one. From the video, to the lyrics, to the supposed rationale behind their creation, this song isn’t what it seems, and to understand what’s going on we must look between the blurred lines.
Robin Thicke has claimed that this song represents a person’s struggle with being rejected, and the perseverance of spirit that it takes in order to keep pursuing that which speaks to you. That explanation has since been amended to suggest that it’s about a man trying to pursue a woman he knows to already be engaged in a relationship, and how that shouldn’t be any barrier to pursuing her, so he won’t let it be… yeah, because that makes the song so much better.
Let’s look at the video for a second, I mean it had to be created twice so that one version could have included nudity. I have nothing against nudity, but let’s not say this song isn’t about the objectification of women, and then have an entire video be naked women simulating various sexual acts with the performers.
It’s crazy to think this song is almost 5 years old now, and it still gets playtime. I’ve heard it at weddings, school dances, community events, really anything showing a party, and every time I’m just wondering if anyone is really listening, and if so, is it just that they don’t care, or they can’t understand what’s going on. I really don’t which reasoning I would be ok with, both are rather unsettling.
It would be nice to think that in the five years since this song was topping the charts that we have made this into an example of how not to act or think, but no, sometimes it feels like we’ve taken a few steps backwards. If our current president wasn’t enough of an example of how prevalent the message behind this song is still engrained within the power system of our country.
I’m sure a lot of this could come off as sounding “prudish” or “uptight” about what should be a “fun” song, and I DON’T GIVE 1 FUCK, this sentiment needs to die. It’s disgusting to think that this is not only acceptable, but it’s “chart-topping.”
Lyrics:
Everybody get up
Everybody get up (Hey, hey, hey)
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
Hey, hey, hey
If you can’t hear what I’m trying to say
If you can’t read from the same page
Maybe I’m going deaf
Maybe I’m going blind
Maybe I’m out of my mind
Everybody get up
OK now he was close, tried to domesticate you
But you’re an animal, baby, it’s in your nature
Just let me liberate you
Hey, hey, hey
You don’t need no papers
Hey, hey, hey
That man is not your maker
And that’s why I’m gon’ take a good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You’re a good girl
Can’t let it get past me
You’re far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
I hate these blurred lines
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
But you’re a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me
Everybody get up
What do they make dreams for
When you got them jeans on
What do we need steam for
You the hottest bitch in this place
I feel so lucky
Hey, hey, hey
You wanna hug me
Hey, hey, hey
What rhymes with hug me?
Hey, hey, hey
OK now he was close, tried to domesticate you
But you’re an animal, baby it’s in your nature
Just let me liberate you
Hey, hey, hey
You don’t need no papers
Hey, hey, hey
That man is not your maker
Hey, hey, hey
And that’s why I’m gon’ take a good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You’re a good girl
Can’t let it get past me
You’re far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
Everybody get up
I hate these blurred lines
I know you want it
I hate them lines
I know you want it
I hate them lines
I know you want it
But you’re a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me
Shake around, get down, get up
Do it like it hurt, like it hurt
What you don’t like work?
Everybody get up
Baby can you breathe? I got this from Jamaica
It always works for me, Dakota to Decatur, uh huh
No more pretending
Hey, hey, hey
‘Cause now you winning
Hey, hey, hey
Here’s our beginning
I always wanted a good girl
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
You’re a good girl
Can’t let it get past me
You’re far from plastic
Talk about getting blasted
I hate these blurred lines
(Everybody get up)
I know you want it
I know you want it
I know you want it
But you’re a good girl
The way you grab me
Must wanna get nasty
Go ahead, get at me
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
Everybody get up
