Naïve is such an interesting word; it encapsulates a wide range of other words:
aw-shucks, dewy, dewy-eyed, green, ingenuous, innocent, naïf (or naif), primitive, simple, simpleminded, uncritical, unknowing, unsophisticated, unsuspecting, unsuspicious, unwary, unworldly, wide-eyed
We use it negatively though it could have a positive connection, regardless, to be called naïve is never really a good thing. So, The Kooks create Naïve, it balances on an insulting ballad to scorn lover that never seem to make the cut.
There have been times where I have found myself in my life wanting to point fingers at everyone else, expecting to feel some sense of liberation in being able to assign the blame to anyone that wasn’t myself. I’ve used naïve as an excuse for myself, and others, and never was it correctly assigned.
To be naïve is to be still open to the wonderment of everything that there is to offer. Jaded misconceptions of guile and deceit haven’t created an abiding sense of paranoia with everyone and their actions.
I regret my part in taking advantage of those that may have been naïve. I regret using “being naïve” as a scapegoat for myself or for anyone else, especially those that I was supposedly caring for. At this point I can’t apologize for my action anymore, I’ve done that already, nor do I carry forward with their weight pulling me down. Instead, I’ll honor these actions through not perpetuating them any further and instead let the bruises they gave me along the way be a small reminder of the pain they can hold.
Lyrics:
[Verse 1]
I’m not saying it was your fault
Although you could have done more
Oh, you’re so naïve yet so
How could this be done
By such a smiling sweetheart?
Oh, and your sweet and pretty face
Is such an ugly word for something so beautiful
Oh, that every time I look inside
[Chorus]
I know she knows that I’m not fond of asking
And true or false, it may be, well, she’s still out to get me
And I know she knows that I’m not fond of asking
True or false, it may be, she’s still out to get me
[Verse 2]
I may say it was your fault
Because I know you could have done more
Oh, you’re so naïve, yet so
How could this be done
By such a smiling sweetheart?
Oh, and your sweet and pretty face
Is such an ugly word for something so beautiful
Oh, that every time I look inside
[Chorus]
I know she knows that I’m not fond of asking
And true or false, it may be, well, she’s still out to get me
And I know she knows that I’m not fond of asking
True or false, it may be, she’s still out to get me
[Verse 3]
So how could this be done
By such a smiling sweetheart?
Oh, you’re so naïve, yet so
Is such an ugly thing for someone so beautiful
That every time you’re on his side
[Chorus]
I know she knows that I’m not fond of asking
True or false, it may be, well, she’s still out to get me
And I know she knows that I’m not fond of asking
True or false, it may be, she’s still out to get me
[Outro]
Just don’t let me down, just don’t let me down
Hold on to your kite
Just don’t let me down, just don’t let me down
Hold on to your kite, hey, girl, hold on
Just don’t let me down, just don’t let me down
Hold on to this kite, let it go
Just don’t let me down, just don’t let me down
