I, like many, discovered this song through the Garden State soundtrack. 16 years later, and that soundtrack still stands as one of the best. It was a large reason behind the success of the movie, every song worked perfectly with its used moment, and helped encapsulate a slew of emotions that no other cinematic device could.
This song was used after the main character slipped into a dissociative state having just buried his mother and decided to soothe his emotional turmoil through a little recreational enjoyment. The world continued to move around him as his anguish slowly transitioned into a hollowness that could only be categorized as indifference.
Indifference is another type of boredom. It manifests in others differently, some may appear relaxed and calm, while others are more withdrawn. The result is still the same, and that is someone that ultimately begins to retreat into a different state in order to break their boredom.
It’s hard for me to currently empathize with this particular type of boredom, I seem to have a thought on most things, so to be indifferent towards any one thing is a bit out of the ordinary. I may not always share my thoughts if you could believe that, but they’re there, and as such, I believe my boredom is often sourced in another version. There was a time when my response was found more in indifference, however that time feels like its long since passed.
